Winter wonderland with a digital twist: a Dutch ice rink's LED upgrade

IJsbaan Haarlem, an ice rink located in the Netherlands, has been a beloved winter spot for nearly half a century, attracting around 250,000 visitors each winter season. The facility hosts numerous evening competitions, such as the prestigious national marathon for top athletes. Real-time display of scores and lap times of skaters are crucial for both spectators and participants. However, previous screens were prone to corrosion and malfunction due to aging in the harsh, icy conditions of the ice rink. Moreover, the bright lights used to illuminate the rink during evening hours further complicated the visibility of the displayed content, negatively impacting the viewing experience.

To solve this issue, IJsbaan Haarlem partnered with local audio-visual expert LP Presentatie Specialisten. They recommended upgrading to two 15 m² LED screens made of Hikvision P3.9 Outdoor Fixed LED Display Units. These units are rated IP67 (front) and IP66 (rear), designed to withstand extreme temperatures and harsh outdoor conditions, making them ideal for the ice rink's environment. Another key improvements of the new LED screens is its higher pixel density, which results in superior resolution and clarity. During evening sessions, the screens’ high contrast ensures that the scores, lap times, advertisements, and notifications are clearly visible, even under the intense lighting. This has significantly enhanced the overall experience for both skaters and spectators, who can now follow the competitions without any distractions.

The deployment of the new LED screens have brought multiple benefits. The screens’ durability and resistance to weather conditions have reduced the frequent maintenance and repair issues. This has not only lowered operational costs but also minimized downtime, keeping the rink running smoothly.
